Photography César Buitrago
Where are you from?
Born and raised in a city in Colombia called Cali where I lived until I was 12 before moving to Miami, FL.
When did you move to New York?
I moved to New York in September of 2018! I moved from Minneapolis, MN, where I got recruited to play soccer.
What interests you about photography?
What interests me most and what I love most about photography is the concept of constructing one's own reality. The phrase "as seen through my lens" describes it well. I've learned that we are subjects to the reality we tell ourselves and are only limited by what we perceive, so I have taken on photography to help me remember the moments that mean something to me. I often find myself photographing shapes, shadows, light, and all other incredibly simple gestures in the world that remind me that beauty is all among us. When I sit and look back at that imagery, it calms me. "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes" Marcel Proust.
What camera/cameras do you use?
For the most part I gravitate towards film. I shoot on a Mamiya RZ67, which is medium format film. It's big and chunky but it is so beautiful. My other handy and reliable camera is my 35mm Contax G2 which is always at my hip ready to capture the world unfolding before me. When shooting digital for work, I usual stick with a Canon Mark IV and bounce between 24-70mm and 85mm canon lenses.
